My boyfriend and I paid a visit here and were stoked with the service, food, atmosphere and presentation. When the chef is busy, he doesn't have time to engage in this type of lengthy conversation, but we were lucky to catch him at a relatively nonbusy time. The conversation included baseball and Ichiro, climate change, sansho (which garnished the yuba), and the many different types of citrus fruits available in Japan that Americans have never heard of. "Blue ice cream" and cheesecake finished off our meal. We topped this all off with a spider roll, which was the most delicious one I've ever had (the chef informed us that only non-Japanese order this). I'm a big lotus root fan, and the dish of fried lotus root in a miso-mustard sauce was delicious. My partner had a luscious lamb chop, while I had a lightly miso-ed Spanish mackerel (not to be confused with saba, the kind of mackerel often used for sushi). From this we moved on to a shira-ae (tofu dressed) salad with mozzarella-very nice, and an unusual but delicious barbecued yuba skin, which I would order again in a minute. The amuse bouche was delicious-firefly squid (one of my favorites) in a mustard sauce, a broccoli rabe type veggie in a savory sesame sauce, and fried tiny (really tiny) white fish. The minimum order here is 3500 yen per person, so bring your appetite. So we plopped ourselves down at the counter and proceeded to have a scrumptious meal and a lovely evening of conversation with the. You often need reservations here, but we just happened to drop by on a cold, windy night and found the restaurant empty.
